Corentyne, Berbice. Now retired after
34 years working with the sugar industry,
the 69-year-old spends her days keeping
busy with house chores. She admits that
she is committed to the traditional way of
life and prefers to cook her food on her

The cleaners of Massiah Primary School are earning an honest living

Dennis Stephens is from Long Creek Village and for the
past 25 years he has been walking and working in the
forested area of the village cutting trees to make ‘bora
sticks’ which he would sell by the bundle to farmers in the
community. The bora sticks are used in gardens and large
scale farms to promote the growth of the bora plant which
is basically a vine that runs producing the vegetable, bora
