FOLLOWING lengthy periods of power outages over the weekend, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) yesterday said that it will issue a statement today.
A team from GPL, however, had an interview at National Communications Network (NCN) Radio and Television yesterday, and the rest of the media were not invited.
Efforts to get a comment from the Director of Operations, Colin Singh; Acting Chief Executive Officer, Aeshwar Deonarine; and Public Relations Officer, Shevion Sears-Murray yesterday proved futile.
They told the Guyana Chronicle that they will issue a statement later and they were instructed not to talk.
Since Friday night several city wards, East Coast Demerara, West Coast Demerara, East Bank Demerara and its environs experienced long hours of power outage, without an advisory from the power company.
It was until in the early hours of the morning that power was restored to the East Coast Demerara and other areas.
In recent times, consumers have been complaining about constant power outages unleashed on them by GPL, and often they are not informed about the power outage schedule. When the new plant at Kingston was commissioned recently, at a cost of US$27.5M, GPL officials had announced that ‘blackouts will be a thing of the past’.
The new plant, which added 20.7 megawatts to the generation capacity, was supposed to allow the GPL to further reduce production costs and improve supply reliability.
Blackouts are still with us
