THE Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has launched a formal investigation into a workplace accident that claimed the life of Mr Eddie Yang, a Chinese man who resided in Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 11:46 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at a storage facility belonging to Zheng Xin Aluminium Alloy Doors and Windows Processing Factory, located at Lot 26 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara. Preliminary reports indicate that a significant quantity of glass stored in a 40-foot container at the front of the premises collapsed unexpectedly, trapping Mr. Yang beneath the debris.
Co-workers at the scene immediately raised an alarm and worked to rescue the victim. He was rushed to a nearby healthcare facility but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
In accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 of the Laws of Guyana, the ministry has initiated a formal investigation to determine the root cause of the incident and assess compliance with occupational safety standards at the site. The investigation is being spearheaded by Senior Occupational Safety and Health Officer Mr. Darwin Bourne and OSH Officer Mr. Ray Hosannah.
Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Mr Yang. In his statement, the minister emphasised the importance of adhering to proper workplace safety practices.
“This unfortunate loss serves as a sobering reminder of the need for stringent safety and health measures at all places of work,” Minister Hamilton said. “Employers and workers must remain vigilant and committed to fostering safe environments to prevent the occurrence of such devastating events.”
The ministry has assured the public that it will take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served and that safety protocols are reinforced to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
