AN additional 104 households across five communities in Region One’s Mabaruma sub-district are now reaping the benefits of clean and reliable energy, following the latest distribution of solar panels under the government’s ongoing Hinterland Electrification Programme.
The new beneficiaries—residents of Whitewater, Kamwatta, Yarakita, Wauna, and Sugar Hill—are now enjoying improved access to electricity, which is expected to significantly enhance their daily lives, and support long-term development in these hinterland communities.

The solar panel distribution was spearheaded by Minister of Housing and Water and Parliamentary Representative for Region One (Barima-Waini), Collin D Croal. He was accompanied by Regional Chairman Mr. Brentnol Ashley, Vice-Chairperson Ms. Annansha Peters, and Regional Executive Officer Mr. Sewchand.

Technical guidance and demonstrations on the use and maintenance of the systems were provided by a representative of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA).
“This is a fulfillment of our government’s promise to ensure that each and every community is developed,” Minister Croal affirmed, noting that the initiative aims to bridge the energy divide between coastal and interior regions through clean, sustainable solutions.
For many residents, the impact of receiving solar power is both immediate and meaningful. Wauna resident and mother of three, Ms. Glenda McTurk shared that the system will greatly assist her children’s education, especially as the family previously had no access to electricity.
In Yarakita, Mr. Derick Emanuel expressed satisfaction with the programme, noting that the installation of the solar panel has brought greater comfort and convenience to his family. Another resident, Mr. Richard Abraham said the panel allows him to stay better connected with loved ones through improved use of his mobile phone.

The solar panel initiative is part of the wider push by the Government of Guyana to foster energy equity and resilience in remote areas. By harnessing renewable energy, the Hinterland Electrification Programme not only addresses critical infrastructure gaps but also supports national goals for environmental sustainability and inclusive development.
