THE sixth edition of ‘A Treat for My Mother’ by Director/Producer Simone Dowding, through her Purple Arts Production company, will be on in another two weeks.
Not to be confused with the ‘Mother and Daughter Pageant’, the show will be held at the National Cultural Centre on Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown, and promises to get going at 20:00 hours sharp on May 14, which is Mother’s Day.
This year’s show which would’ve been the eighth had it not been for the Coronavirus pandemic, is expected to be different as it will include performances by guitarist Herbert ‘Herbie’ Marshall and local poet Nikhil Sankar who will be showcasing his singing talent.
In an interview with Buzz, Dowding revealed that for the first time her show will feature an Amerindian dance which will be done by Mikhail Andrews.
Bonny Alves, Charmaine Blackman, Sheon Cadogan, Sean Bhola, Elon Nelson, Ronald Greene, Mosa Telford, Beverly Smith, Leona Walton, Barbara Lee, Mark Hall, among others, will also be performing.
The ‘Best Dressed’ mother in purple will walk away with a pair of gold earrings from L. Seepersaud Maraj and Sons, along with a piece of jewellery from Sunflower Jewellery.
“The genre of the show caters to the mature audiences. Come and be entertained, win door prizes; we have 15, and it would be a delightful evening of oldies sung by top Guyanese performers. Come and bask in the glow of songs of the 60s and 70s,” Dowding urged.
A fashion display is expected to be part of the show, along with a craft space for persons to display their products.
“This event can be used to bring families closer together. Also, the music will take mothers down memory lane. It’s clean fun for all of the family so come and bask in the glow of love!” Dowding had shared in a previous interview.
“I want it to be a pure, delightful evening for mothers and to bring back to them fond memories like when they were young, and probably encountered their first love,” she added.
Dowding, who has more than 30 years of theatre experience in Guyana, graduated from the Burrowes School of Arts and other institutions, ending up with a total of 13 certificates.
She’s also won Theatre Guild’s ‘Best Actress’ award in 2012 for the play “Old Story Times” and she works primarily with children through her production house.
In addition to the popular ‘Link Show’, Dowding has worked on ‘House of Pressure,’ ‘Miriamy,’ ‘Eleventh Finger,’ and ‘Jezebel,’ to name a few.
