A HONDA CRV motor vehicle struck a nine-year-old girl down, killing her as she was crossing the Islington Public Road, East Bank of Berbice (EBB), on Friday.

Dead is Carleisa Lewis of Islington, East Bank Berbice. The driver of motorcar PJJ 2394 involved in the accident has been identified as Anthony Persaud of Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice.

Reports indicate that the motorcar was proceeding along the Islington Public Road when it is alleged by the driver that the child ran from east to west and collided with the front portion of his car.

As a result of the collision, the child fell onto the road surface where she received injuries about her body.

She was picked up in an unconscious condition by her sister and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital by the driver of the motorcar where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced her dead on arrival.

The body is at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and it returned negative. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
