FIVE years after the brutal murder of 48-year-old Anita Mohan, whose lifeless body was found in her Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara home, her nephew was, on Monday, found guilty of the crime.
Kevin Mohan called “Chucky”, 27, formerly of Fifth Street, Cummings Lodge, was on trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court for the September 4, 2016, murder of his aunt.
A 12-member jury, after deliberating for almost two hours, returned with a guilty verdict. Justice Kissoon deferred sentencing until August 26.
The convict is being represented by attorney-at-law, Damian DaSilva, while Prosecutors Taneisha Saygon, Lisa Cave and Muntaz Ali are on record for the state.
In March 2021, the case was sent for retrial after the jury was unable to arrive at a verdict. The case was before Justice Navindra Singh.
According to reports, the woman’s battered body was found on the floor of her kitchen at Fifth Street, Cummings Lodge where she lived with Mohan and her son, Intiaz Khan. Khan found his mother lying in blood with her head bashed in and a stab wound to her chest. A bloody ‘rolling pin,’ and a broken bottle, suspected to be the murder weapons, were found close to the body.
The police had noted that the accused confessed to the murder and had said that another person acted as his accomplice.
A post-mortem performed on the remains of the woman revealed that she died from multiple injuries.
