A 20-year-old cyclist was killed Saturday night after a car, PHH 2714, crashed into him on the Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Dead is Lenox Colette of lot 4, Land of Canaan Public Road, EBD. He was killed a stone’s throw away from his home. The 24-year-old driver of Kaneville, Grove, EBD, was taken into police custody as investigations continue.
Reports indicate that motor car PHH 2114 was proceeding north along the western side of the said road, when, it is alleged, that the driver saw the pedal cyclist riding from East to West across the road into his path.
The driver then collided with the cyclist, causing the 20-year-old to land onto the bonnet of the car before tumbling onto the road. Police said the cyclist received several injuries about his body. The driver of the car then picked up the injured man in an unconscious condition and rushed him to the East Bank Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His sister, Asha Nandlall, said when her brother was injured in the accident, their mother heard a loud sound and rushed out to the public road where her worst fears were confirmed. She said her brother was a hardworking, loving and joyful persons who assisted and cared for his mother.
“His body was badly damaged, his hips, ribs, all over his body was broken,” the sister said. Adding that the autopsy was done on Monday, she said her brother died as a result of severe injuries compounded with shock and haemorrhage.
