… Lewis, Eastman and Mounter win `Best Boxer’ awards
THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) maintained their dominance of amateur boxing at the senior level by retaining the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Terrence Alli National Open Boxing Championship which concluded on Sunday at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Gym, situated in Albouystown.Apart from winning championship honours, GDF’s Colin `Superman’ Lewis was adjudged `Best Boxer’ in the Elite category (seniors) after defeating Forgotten Youth Foundation’s (FYF) Marlon Darrell in the final of the junior welterweight division.
Rose Hall Jammers’ (RHJ) Jamal Eastman was adjudged `Best Boxer’ in the Youth category with a victory over FYF’s Junior Henry in the final of the bantamweight division, while Essequibo Boxing Gym’s Akeem Mounter won the junior category `Best Boxer’ award with a victory over Stephan Smith in the middleweight final.
The Guyana Prison Service (Republican) boxing gym placed second for the overall championship title.
All in all, the GDF won five titles including two by walkovers, one by a technical knock-out (TKO) and another in an all-GDF affair.
The Republican gym won two bouts which included a walkover and another by the TKO route.
Rose Hall Jammers won one fight and the Guyana Police Forcer one.
In other results from Sunday’s finals; Diwani Lewis (FYF) lost to Joel Williamson (RHJ) in the lightweight final; Clairmont Gibson (GDF) defeated Delon Charles (FYF) to take the bantamweight title;
Dennis Thomas (GPF) secured a 47-second second-round TKO victory against Trevon King (GDF); GDF’s veteran amateur boxer Markember Pierre lost by TKO also, against his gym mate Desmond Amsterdam, who caused the referee to top the heavyweight bout at two minutes 29 seconds of the second round.
In the super heavyweight division, Eon Fraser (Republican) scored a round one two-minute 45 seconds TKO win to claim the title.
Walkover victories were also registered by GDF’s Quincy Boyce and team mate Teuismar Peters.
Boyce recorded his walkover win against Travis Hubbard in the lightweight final, while Peters got his victory against RHJ’s Tyrone Lashley in the junior flyweight final.
In an all-GDF affair, Tefon Green defeated Aluko Venture on points, to win the flyweight title while Clifton Graham of Republican won by a walkover against FYF’s Kellon King, to capture the welterweight title.
Meanwhile, the GBA selectors will meet shortly to name its team of boxers to be encamped in preparation for this month end’s `Back to the Future’ Caribbean championships which will be hosted by Guyana at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
