Jailed for assaulting, threatening reputed wife

RAUL Oliviera, of Lot 45 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was, yesterday, sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for assaulting and threatening his reputed wife. The 43-year-old labourer pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, to having on Sunday, January 20, at the same Lot 45 West Ruimveldt, assaulted Lucy Fernandez, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
He also admitted that he threatened the virtual complainant, where a breach of the peace maybe occasioned.
Police Corporal Jomo Nichols, prosecuting, told the court that around midnight that day, the defendant returned home and asked Fernandez to have sexual intercourse with him.
When she refused, he became annoyed and dealt her, a slap to her face, resulting in an argument during which he threatened to chop the woman.
The prosecutor indicated that a medical certificate was issued showing an abrasion caused to the woman’s face.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing the prisoner pro bono, requested that he be fined instead of a custodial penalty.
Oliviera complained that his wife has been seeing another man after he left for the interior to work and was spending his money unnecessarily.
