Remanded on false pretence charge

HEMANT Narine Shilchand (no address given) was remanded to prison yesterday, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a false pretense charge. He was charged indictably with having, on Monday, July 12, 2103, in Georgetown, obtained from Elvis Smith the sum of $800,000 by falsely pretending to be in possession of motor car PRR 3622, knowing it to be false.
Police Inspector Michael Grant, prosecuting, told the court that the accused met the virtual complainant on Hadfield Street and offered him the vehicle for sale, telling him it was parked at Khan Auto Sales and they made arrangement to do the transaction.
The prosecutor, successfully, objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence and the fact that Shilchand has pending matters of similar nature in another court.
The case has been adjourned to February 28.
