Son fined for setting fire to mother’s house

JASON Rampersaud (no address given), who set fire to their dwelling house following a dispute with his mother, was fined $30,000 with an alternative of six months imprisonment on Monday. Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed the monetary penalty on him after hearing a probation report on his background at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice.
Probation Officer Maisie Sheppard said Rampersaud admitted losing his temper and has expressed regret over the incident.
The defendant’s mother, Halima Basurdeen confessed she was wrong to hit him when he asked for money owed him for crabs which he purchased, causing him to become annoyed.
The woman said she did not give him the $500 and, after she struck him, he reacted by hitting a lighted stove which fell on the ground.
But the flame was quickly extinguished and nothing was burnt, she said.
