Sick juror brings temporary halt to Fernandes murder trial

Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh, was testifying at the Compton Fernandes murder trial yesterday when the proceedings had to be adjourned to Thursday after a female member of the jury became suddenly ill. When the matter resumes, the doctor is expected to complete his testimony.
Fernandes, who in a caution statement to the police admitted  that he had beaten the man, which statement had been admitted by the judge following a voir dire – a trial within a trial – in the absence of the jury, is accused with having  on Sunday July 3, 2005, in the county of  Demerara, murdered Latchman Seeram also called ‘Coolie Boy’.
The trial is likely to continue on Thursday, when defence counsel Mr. Glen Hanoman is expected to cross-examine the pathologist.
