THE Sports Secretariat of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) hosted its awards presentation ceremony last Friday, at the Police Officers’ Mess at Eve Leary, Georgetown, awarding sportsmen and sportswomen among the ranks and others at the managerial level.

Corporal 19751 Trevor Benn received a trophy for being the ‘Most Valuable Player’ in the field of cricket.
He has been representing the GPF at the First Division level since 2005 and participated in the National Cricket Camp last month, when selected in the 13-man squad to represent Guyana in the West Indies Regional four days competition, scheduled for January 7 to March 3, 2010.
Benn is the first policeman, in 15 years, to be chosen as a country cricket representative, following Constable Mark Burnett in 1994.
During the Friday function, Police Commissioner Henry Greene gave an on-the-spot promotion to Corporal 17150 Amanda Hermonstine, making her a Sergeant, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of sports in the GPF, especially in the volleyball discipline.
Mr. Greene also appointed Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis to be Chairman of the Force Athletics Section; Superintendent Nigel Hoppie as Chairman of the Cricket Section and Superintendent Deryck Josiah in charge of the Football Section.
Others awarded for their contribution to sports were Assistant Commissioner Gavin Primo; Assistant Commissioner Vyphuis; Best Coach, Sergeant 13768 Lyndon Wilson; Most Valuable Player in Dominoes, Hermonstine; Most Valuable Player in Table Tennis, Corporal 16928 Andrew Daly; Best Organised Team Captain (Cricket), Constable 19891 Rawle Brown and Most Improved Athlete, Constable 20726 Winston George.
