Berbice rice farmer, family members brutalised in armed attack

– son-in-law abducted at gunpoint, relieved of his licensed .32 pistol with ammo
A 56-year-old Berbice rice farmer was bound, gagged and brutally beaten yesterday, by four armed men who invaded his Bel Air, West Coast Berbice premises and stole a quantity of jewellery and $500,000 in cash.
The man’s wife Zulika Subhan, 56 years, and daughter Zamena Subhan, 28 years were also held up with him.
The robbers then kidnapped Subhan’s son-in-law, Wazim Sheriff, and hijacked a motor car he was driving. The man was found, hours later, abandoned at
Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, without a trace of the vehicle.  However, police later confirmed that  the car was subsequently recovered with the engine disabled and the keys missing.
The rice farmer, Albert Subhan, of Lot 22 Bel Air, who also operates a grocery shop where he lives, was gun butted and suffered a wound that took about 12 stitches.
His back and left side also showed signs of the blows inflicted on him.
The injured rice planter, who was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) by ambulance, writhing in pain, managed to speak briefly to the media.
He recalled that, around 10:30hrs, he was sitting in a hammock under his house when he was confronted by about three armed men, who appeared to have entered from the back, since his wife and daughter were at the front of the yard.

The men demanded cash but as he did not comply with the demand, they beat him with their weapons, tied his hands and feet and taped his mouth.
Then, turning their attention to the mother and daughter, one of the men bound and gagged them, as well, Subhan said.
Simultaneously, the others made their way into the Subhans’ home and proceeded to ransack it.
Meanwhile, a police report late yesterday afternoon confirmed that the robbery occurred  around 10:30hrs when four men, two of whom were armed with firearms, entered Subhan’s grocery shop and held him up along with his wife Zulika and daughter Zamena.
The report confirmed that the men assaulted  Albert Subhan about his body and also took away $500,000.00 and a quantity of jewellery.
Police said that as the perpetrators were leaving the grocery shop, Subhan’s son-in-law Wazim Sheriff, 36 years, was entering and he was held at gunpoint and his licensed .32 pistol and ammunition along with $8,000.00 were taken away.
The men then placed Wazim Sheriff in his motor car, PNN 871, and escaped in the vehicle.
Police said Wazim Sheriff later reported the incident at the Mahaicony Police Station and stated that the perpetrators had abandoned him and the motor car at Yorkshire Dam, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, after tying him up.
The car was recovered with the engine disabled and the keys missing.
Investigations are in progress.
