Kennard’s Phagwah horse race meet DDL to sponsor feature event

BEVERAGE giant Demerara Distillers Limited has for the 45th year come on board to sponsor the feature event of the 45th staging of the Annual Kennard’s Memorial Phagwah Horse Race meet which is set for Sunday at the Kennard’s Turf Club, Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice, beginning at 13:00hrs.
Yesterday, DDL’s Wines and Spirits Brands Manager Maria Munroe presented Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority and former Chief Justice Cecil Kennard with the sponsorship cheque as well as the trophy for the winner of the `C’ Class and Lower event over one mile which will carry a first prize of $900 000. The second-, third- and fourth-place finishers will receive $450 000, $225 000 and $112 000 respectively.
One five-furlong race as well as five six-furlong races are also on the day’s card, which gets underway at 13:00hrs.
The five-furlong race is open to non-winners of the class `L’ division and the winner will pocket $100 000 while the other top three performers will earn $50 000, $25 000 and $13 000 respectively
The five-furlong race is for horses classified `L’ who are4 non winners and the winner will receive $100 000, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will earn $80,000, $25,000 and $13,000 respectively.
The first six-furlong race is open to horses classified `L’ and Lower three-year-old Guyana-bred horses and the winner will receive $150 000.
Horses classified `E’ and Lower will also contest a six-furlong event with the winner pocketing $400 000.
A $110 000 first prize is up for grabs for horses classified `L’ Open over six furlongs, while three-year-old Guyana-bred maidens will also do battle over six furlongs for a $200 000 first prize and horses classified `J’ and Lower will battle over six furlongs for a first prize worth $140 000.
The other event on the day’s card is open to top horses classified `H’ and Lower and they will battle over seven furlongs for a first prize worth $250 000.
