St. Kitts national, Guyanese remanded on drug charges

A NATIONAL of St. Kitts and a Guyanese were both remanded to prison yesterday on charges of drug trafficking and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The islander, Dexter Lewis, 37, and Adrian Beckles (no address given)
appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton and pleaded not guilty.
One allegation against them is that, on May 30, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), they had one kilogramme 109 grammes of cocaine that they were attempting to export.
The other accusation they faced said, the same day, the duo had unlawful possession of 15 rounds of 9 mm ammunition and a .44 ‘Smith and Wesson Magnum’ revolver, all without lawful authority.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, representing Lewis, said the gun and ammo were not found in his possession nor in his luggage but in Beckles’.
Police Sergeant Shellon Daniels, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail and said Lewis lives in St. Kitts with his reputed wife.
The Prosecutor said Lewis also gave Police a caution statement incriminating Beckles.
The cases were transferred to Providence Court, also on East Bank Demerara, for June 7.
