Whispering Mabel

Mabel always wondered why was it that public servants are no longer regarded as civil; but a recent encounter with the secretary to the Permanent Secretary of the prestigious Ministry on Brickdam, by her nephew who experienced the worst kind of incivility and uncouthness that uniquely befits a barbarian. This lady secretary takes the cake and should be regarded as typifying the very nadir of inefficiency. It transpired that the nephew, who hails from an outstanding family, had the misfortune of meeting the secretary with both of her hands logging a pile of files just outside of the office of the Permanent Secretary. He duly handed over the letter which was addressed to the PS and enquired the name of the recipient secretary whose amazing response was she will not divulge her name because he should have brought a book for signatures. The nephew responded by asking her whether that was the way she treated members of the public. Her response was “jus like duh”. Well, Mabel is no longer baffled about why the public servants are no longer considered civil. Equally, Mabel is not expecting any improvement in the performance of this type of crudity unless the minister departs from being passive in matters of this nature.

There are several lessons to be learnt as a result of the embarrassing snafu over the attempt to suspend a CEO for one month and the deprivation of the use of the entities’ motor vehicle. Mabel suspects that the Board of Directors allowed themselves to be persuaded by one of their colleagues that the action would meet with the acceptance of ministerial blessings.

Prudence dictates that Mabel desists from delving any further in this matter, but there must be a lot of sadder and wiser functionaries around.

Impudence is not the preserve of only functionary reference to West Indies captain Chris Gayle.
