THE Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists joined the Caribbean Union in ‘Hands Across the Caribbean’ yesterday for a massive health fair at the Ministry of Health compound at Brickdam, Georgetown.

‘Hands Across the Caribbean’ is an initiative of the Caribbean Union Health Ministries Department based in Trinidad and Tobago. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been promoting healthy lifestyles for over 100 years. Back then it was

called Health Reform.
This is according to the Director of Caribbean Union, Pastor Alexander Isaacs, who pointed out that this is the initiative of the Adventist churches throughout the Caribbean in partnership with the health ministries.
He added that once every year, there is collaboration to have these activities hosted, which are designed to raise awareness for non-communicable diseases such as stroke, hypertension,

diabetes, etc.
Isaacs said that the programme is planned across the entire Caribbean to reduce these diseases.
The Guyana leg of this programme is organised by the Director of the union’s headquarters here, Mr. John Joseph.
Isaacs acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Health, the National Blood Transfusion Unit (NBTU) and other Non-Governmental Organisations who played an active part in the event.
He said that the fair offers free health checks, video shows, health lectures and even a children’s programme, all in the effort to improve healthy living in Guyana.
Pastor Isaacs noted that the event would have been impossible without the assistance of the Health Ministry which has been very hospitable to their annual events.
He said that they have always offered them the compound to set up tents and carry out the activities, and they are very grateful.
Isaacs noted also that the ministry has supplied them with the required machines, equipment and resources to make the event possible.
He said that these are not the only activities held here as similar events are usually held countrywide with the support of the ministry.
He pointed out that there are a number of agreements with the health ministry, including providing airplane services for persons in hinterland communities to access medications, etc.
He observed that Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran was unable to attend and participate in the event as he had to leave the country for an urgent engagement.
