MAYOR of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore, has outlined upcoming initiatives that include enhanced enforcement measures and public education campaigns aimed at curbing littering in and around the capital city.
Mayor Mentore said consultations will be held every other week and must be sustained. He emphasised that as a council, they will educate citizens and collaborate with government to get persons on the right path.
Mayor Mentore committed at the level of the Mayor and City Council to do their part, voicing expectations for government to do same.
“We also expect citizens themselves to do their part and be committed in these exercises. Like others would have said, we just can’t be chasing after where the next person dumps garbage…that culture has to change. That transition has to be made,” Mayor Mentore added.
He asserted that whatever measures have to be put in place to curb littering, will be enforced to stop any attempt by persons to litter.
Noting that they want to encourage vending, he said it must be done in a responsible way, where persons deal with issues and are committed to the overall agenda of the council and the country as a whole.
“We’ll be putting systems in place. We’ll be addressing these things every other week to be able to get this place cleared. But while we do that, we have to be able to sustain this kind of drive, and we will implore with the Town Clerk, the General Council to do this, and we finance these agendas,” Mayor Mentor disclosed.
Additionally, new measures will be put in place to address this scourge, encouraging persons to do the right thing.
