The choice is yours for an easy pick come September 1

Dear Editor,
ALBERT Einstein conceptualised, “Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.” Guyana is clinically poised at a juncture where economics and politics play a pivotal part in the developmental pace for maintenance and sustenance and, extension and expansion, when, according to the IMF, the nation is advancing as the world’s fastest growing economy per capita, statistically.

Guyana experienced an average of 47 per cent real GDP growth annually between 2022 and 2024, as per The Guyana Business & Magazine.
The current state of the economy has been catapulted not by any “Burnham Magic” but by the “Midas Touch” of President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
After failing to capitalise on a healthy economy when the PPP/C departed the administration in 2015, the APNU/AFC faulted again and did not prevent the nation from sliding into a state of bankruptcy as they (PNC) did during the 28 years from 1964 to 1992.

It was the PPP which resolved the country’s problems and brought the economy back to economic viability during their 28 years 2-fold era, lasting from 1992 to 2015 and 2020 to 2025. The PPP/C prevented Guyana from being further embarrassed as “a laughing stock” to the world.
The students in the study of economics would be familiar with Thomas Sowell who is an American economist, economic historian, and social and political commentator. He is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.

With widely published commentary and books—and as a guest on TV and radio—he is a well-known voice in the American conservative movement as a prominent Black conservative.
According to him, “The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.”

As the stage is set for general and regional elections on September 1, all ears are attuned to the “sound of music” providing the sweetness of fake, false and fraudulent choices, and eyes focused in the direction where “blowing in the wind” lies peace, progress and prosperous alternatives.
Worthless promises are easy to make especially when doing so out of desperation and being carefree of affronting the modicum of reality. On the contrary, meaningful guarantees are difficult commitments, more so, when challenges are competitive and the care and concern is centred on practicality, affordability and integrity.
Thomas Sowell incidentally preached, “If you care about someone, you tell them the truth. If you care about yourself, you tell them what they want to hear.”
Are politicians telling the people what the people want the politicians to tell them, or, are politicians telling the people what they want to tell the people?
The election campaign has been anything except a quiet walk in the park. It has encountered: a roller coaster ride where the electorate has been taken on a wild goose chase; a visit to the circus where comedians and clowns entertain; a rock concert event where only noise prevails; an evening with opera music where touch and taste are foreign to its locality; time spent at the zoo where fear is realised from being scared; a day at the park where the outcome of a game is arranged; a day at the movie where the impossible become possible; an evening stroll at the seaside where time and tide prevail for people to feel and find sand and pebbles and not silver and gold on the beach.

The people will probe past practice, pursuance and perpetration before plotting their way to the poll come September 1. When the dust settles in less than two weeks, showtime will be over, day dreaming comes to a sudden end, some will experience their worst nightmare, while some will continue without any surprise.
Guyanese will have another simple, smooth and soft opportunity to cast their votes with a clear conscience and convincing conviction.
The difference between 2015/2020 and 2020/2025 is that the stark reality is very apparent in terms of performance, production and promises.

The APNU/AFC had a golden opportunity but blew their chance during their 2015-2020 era. They had a “field day,” enjoyed a picnic in the park, slept while the country burnt, acted selfishly, axed the sugar industry, taxed heavily, splurged lavishly and lived the “good life” while the small man waited to become a “real man” and had to tighten the belt around their waist.
The APNU/AFC could not pull the wool over the international community’s eyes when they failed in their irascible attempt to rig the 2020 general elections.
CARICOM “pulled the rug” under the PNC’s feet since Burnham and Hoyte departed. Granger was a “sanctimonious gangster” in the eyes of our Caribbean sisters and brothers. President Ali became the “doyen” to the world, a true leader in the West Indies and a “beacon of hope” for Guyana.
The PPP/C “made hay while the sun shines” during their 2020-2025 stint and literally had a “heyday” with their achievement of unity as a One Guyana, acquisition of respect from the world and advancement from poverty to prosperity.

With prudent financial management, the PPP/C has circumvented the threat of “the Dutch Disease” with the pertinent application of their Fiscal and Monetary policies as required and related to practical and necessary resolutions.
Guyanese have to “give Jack his jacket,” do not call a spade a heart and let their “conscience be their guide” when choosing the next party to provide, protect and promote the best interest of the people and state. It is crystal clear who has the capacity and intellect to resolve problems and the ingenuity to prevent pain, poverty and perversion. The choice is yours for an easy pick.
Yours respectfully,
Jai Lall.
