People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has positioned the ruling party as the only political force that can take Guyana forward.

During a rally in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazruni), on Saturday, the General Secretary reflected on how massive the crowd was and urged persons to mobilise on September 1 to keep the progress.

“So when you vote on the first of September, please ensure that you don’t be misled…The future of our country is in your hands; your children’s future.

“You have to vote for a party that you can trust and the only way you know if you can trust the party is based on track record,” Jagdeo said.

He highlighted that the PPP/C is the only party that unites Guyanese of all races, firmly rejecting those who seek to divide the nation.

Branding the opposition as unfit to govern, he tore into their lack of policies, poor performance in office, and history of broken promises.

He singled out A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) leadership for having no policy-making ability and referenced embattled businessman Azruddin Mohamed as being “blank” when asked basic questions.

Dr. Jagdeo contrasted this sort of leader with the PPP, which he said is “tried and tested.”

He contrasted this with the PPP’s “tried and tested” leadership — from President Dr. Irfaan Ali to Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips — stressing that President Ali commands global respect and has safeguarded Guyana’s territorial integrity.

Highlighting the opposition’s disastrous record in government, Dr. Jagdeo recalled that in 2015 miners overwhelmingly supported APNU after they promised to remove all taxes on mining.

Instead, they increased royalty rates, hiked the tributer’s tax, slapped value-added tax (VAT) on machinery and equipment, and even restricted the transport of fuel into the interior without special permission.

“Mining practically died,” he said, while contrasting that with the PPP/C’s actions since returning to office: removing the tributer’s tax, scrapping VAT on machinery and equipment, and reducing royalty rates, steps that have revitalised the mining sector.

He also reminded residents of how Amerindian communities were neglected under the APNU+AFC, with thousands of Community Support Officers (CSOs) fired and one opposition parliamentarian openly insulting Indigenous people.
