Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of Guyana’s ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP), delivered a forceful defense of the PPP/C government’s track record on Sunday (July 13, 2025) as the party officially launched its 2025 re-election campaign.
Addressing thousands of supporters in Georgetown, Jagdeo highlighted a sweeping list of accomplishments under the PPP/C administration, from tax cuts to infrastructure upgrades, positioning the PPP/C as the party of “good management.”
“It is very easy for us to campaign here because every single one of you has seen how this country has changed,” Jagdeo said.
The government, he noted, has eliminated more than 200 hardship taxes since taking office in 2020 and has maintained a policy of no new taxes. Job creation, fueled by investments in oil, agriculture, and construction, has exceeded 60,000, while public sector wages have risen dramatically, pensions have doubled, and the income tax threshold has been raised.
Major projects cited include 12 new hospitals, free tuition at the University of Guyana, the return of the “Because We Care” school grant, and the distribution of more than 50,000 house lots. Amerindian communities, Jagdeo added, have seen renewed land titling and job support programs.
Jagdeo also pointed to tighter oversight in the oil sector and revitalization of traditional industries like sugar and rice.
Billions have been spent to cushion energy, transportation, and mortgage costs.
“It’s not oil, stupid…it is good management,” Jagdeo said, dismissing opposition claims that the government’s gains were solely oil-driven. “It’s not about how much money you have, it is what you choose to do with it—and what your priorities are.”
Emphasising voter mobilization ahead of the election, he warned against complacency. “The massive victory we speak of is only possible if we do the work… a victory will not happen by itself,” he said.
“If you are sitting at home undecided,” Jagdeo added, “this is the party for you.”
