MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, led a crucial discussion on Friday during the quarterly meeting of the National Taskforce for the Prevention of Sexual Violence. The virtual session focused on key legislative and strategic measures aimed at strengthening protections against sexual violence in Guyana.
Among the critical topics discussed were the Family Violence Act [2024], proposed amendments to the Sexual Offences Act [2010], and the draft National Strategic Action Plan 2025-2030. The meeting also reviewed the status of case reports for the 2024-2025 period.
The taskforce, which brings together key government agencies and civil society groups, included representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Home Affairs, Amerindian Affairs, Health, Local Government and Regional Development, as well as Help and Shelter, the Association of Professional Social Workers, NGOs, and Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs).
Minister Persaud reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing sexual violence through legislative reforms and strategic initiatives. The taskforce continues to meet regularly to develop policies and implement programmes aimed at reducing sexual violence and supporting survivors across the country.
