THE police are continuing their investigation into a January 1, 2025 incident that left a West Coast Berbice man dead.
Dead is Kiran Bacchus, 41, a mason of Section ‘A’ Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice. A post-mortem examination on Friday revealed that Kiran died as a result of asphyxia due to aspirated gastric content, along with blood in the airway.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 01:30 hrs at the house of Deepak Bacchus, 27, a mason, who also lives in the same community with his wife, Tena, and his mother, Sookranie Bacchus.
It is alleged that on the day in question, Kiran was consuming alcohol when he found out that Deepak had prevented his (Kiran’s) wife, Seeta Churchand, from entering the yard where their mother lived.
This, reportedly, upset Kiran, prompting him to go to his mother’s residence where he forcefully entered the yard and confronted Deepak.
“This led to a physical altercation that ended with both men allegedly falling to the ground, and Kiran’s head hitting the ground causing him to start bleeding from his nose, and going into a semi-conscious state. He was transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment,” Police Headquarters reported.
On Saturday, Commander of Region Five, Kurleigh Simon confirmed that the suspect was still in custody as investigations are continuing.
