DIRECTOR of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot has stated that government funding is revolutionising prison rehabilitation.

According to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), Director Elliot made these remarks during his quarterly muster and general inspection of officers stationed at the Prisons headquarters.

He said that transforming correctional facilities into environments that prioritise self-improvement and personal growth is a crucial step towards prison rehabilitation. He added that this is why architectural changes are being made by the government to create spaces that encourage learning, creativity, and reflection.

“By redesigning prisons to focus on rehabilitation, providing educational and vocational programmes for inmates, and offering mental health services, we can help boost rehabilitation and give inmates a better chance at success after their release. This shift in focus is not only beneficial for inmates, but for society as a whole,” Elliot was quoted as saying.

With a future ahead, the prison head has outlined a continued focus on holistic rehabilitation efforts within the prisons system and enhanced support for the reintegration of prisoners into society.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration with community partners, private sector, family support networks, government ministries, and law enforcement agencies to ensure the success of these initiatives.

Elliot noted that with continued efforts to rebuild the prison infrastructure and strengthen security at prisons countrywide, prison officers must play their part in ensuring the government’s vision becomes a reality.
