SVG, Barbados suffer defeats

MIAMI, Florida, CMC) – St Vincent and the Grenadines tasted elimination from the CONCACAF Women Gold Cup qualifiers when they slumped to a heavy 4-0 defeat to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday night.

Playing at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, the Vincentians found themselves down 3-0 at the break and failed to recover in the second half as the hosts pressed home their advantage.

The defeat was their fourth in as many games, leaving them rock bottom of Group C in League B without a point. It came five days following an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of the same opponents at home in Kingstown.

Bermuda, who thrashed Barbados 4-2 in Hamilton, top the standings with ten points with the Dominican Republic one point behind in second.
SVG fell behind as early as the second minute when unmarked Jazmin Jackson curled in a volley from eight yards out after being set up by Nadia Colon.
Lucia Marte doubled the lead in the 18th with a glancing header from the middle of the box which slithered through the grasp of goalkeeper Altica Benn, and SVG were on the ropes when Jaylen Vallecillo survived a collision with Benn to head in Kathrynn Gonzalez’s floated cross in the 40th minute.
On resumption, Gabriella Cuevas put the game out of reach on the hour mark, squeezing the ball over the line after Benn had parried a long-range header.
In the same group, Barbados slumped to a second straight loss of the campaign to remain third on four points.
Ashanee Thompson netted a first-half double in the 34th minute and then deep in stoppage, keeping Barbados in the contest after Jaden Masters (5th), Victoria Davis (10th) and Aaliyah Nolan (12th) had fired Bermuda to an early 3-0 lead.
Nolan added a second in the 74th to ensure her side breathing space.
In Group A of League, Trinidad and Tobago’s winless woes continued with a nil-draw with Puerto Rico in San Juan, leaving them bottom on a single point.
