DCC host Everest in opening game tomorrow

THE Georgetown Cricket Association(GCA) on Thursday launched the Pepsi 50 overs first division competition at the Everest Cricket Club.
The competition is scheduled to commence on Saturday with DCC clashing with Everest at DCC from 9:30hrs.
GCA’s Chairman of the Competition’s Committee, Shawn Massiah, provided an overview of the inaugural Pepsi First Division 50 overs zonal league competition.
“The GCA is pleased to announce the partnership with Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), who has come on board with sponsorship for this competition in Georgetown for the first time.
I am lobbying from now that this could be an annual tournament to fuel the passion for cricket in Georgetown.

I am extremely confident that the GCA will host an excellent competition among our nine first division clubs.
This competition should offer great opportunities and experience [to] some of the young and talented cricketers of the future. I am sure we will enjoy watching our budding cricketers perform” said Massiah, the back bone of the cricket development of young and promising cricketers at the Trasport Sports Club.
“This competition will showcase the skillsets, performances and talent of approximately 135 cricketers.
We are sure friends and long serving sport journalists and media houses will help to highlight the results of matches in the daily papers and newscasts, along with our cricclubs scoring app,” the GCA executive continued.

Massiah informed that a draw of zones was done and Zone A consists of MSC, GNIC, MYO, GDF & Police.
Zone B is made up GCC, Transport, DCC & Everest.

According to the playing conditions, the GCA has introduced three powerplays as is done in international cricket.
It is also stated that pace bowlers must account for forty percent of the overs in games in which 50 overs are completed and 10 runs will be added to the batting team for each over not bowled by a pacer.

Also speaking yesterday were DDL Pepsi brand manager Larry Wills, GCA’s Vice-President, former West Indies off-spinner Roger Harper and GCA’s Shaquille Williams.
It was disclosed that the two top teams in each Zone will contest the final while DDL’s Rodney Ambrose handed over the sponsorship cheque to GCA’s Debbie McNicols.
On Sunday, GCC face Trasport at Bourda, Malteenoes battle MYO at MSC and Police battle GDF in Queenstown while GNIC drew the bye.
