Fact-finding report on Chinese Landing to soon be made public

Dr. Jagdeo says it has been sent to human rights body
GENERAL Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, announced on Thursday that the fact-finding report on Chinese Landing has been completed and will be made public soon.

“I spoke with Minister [Gail] Teixeira; the report has been completed and it has been sent to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR),” he said during a press briefing at Freedom House on Thursday.

Dr. Jagdeo added: “That report, Minister Teixeira said, will be made public and then you will see the findings.”
He further said that in the report, the findings will be highlighted along with the government’s response.
The PPP government had halted all mining operations at Chinese Landing, and Dr. Jagdeo had previously underscored that his administration intends to respect the ruling of the IACHR, and a multifaceted team will be visiting the area to deal with environmental, social and mining rights issues.

Last month, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance issued a statement informing the public that the Government of Guyana had taken a decision to temporarily stop all mining at Chinese Landing to allow for a more conducive environment to address the concerns of the community and all concerned.
The statement read that the response to the claims contained in the IACHR resolution included that community members, “felt unsafe even passing through the concessions to the other side to farm, hunt and fish, and to visit our families.”
