THE Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), on Tuesday, partnered with the Texila American University (TAU) to provide scholarships for students at the university.
“It is an august occasion for us with this partnership with Texila. We started this journey almost a year ago and we thought it was not possible,” Director of GOAL, Professor Dr. Jacob Opadeyi said at the virtual launch.

Professor Opadeyi said that over two years ago, they were looking for collaborations with a university and TAU rose to the occasion.
“I was very pleased to see so many of you choose Texila for the academic programme. It is a stamp of approval by the students that they are prepared to get their degree through Texila. I am familiar with the quality of education or the quality of care that Texila gives,” he said.

He added that when it comes to GOAL’s online degree programme, it is not just about studying but about taking care of the students’ welfare and mental ability because students have to study on their own.
“At best, they may interact with classmates via WhatsApp or whatever means but at the end of the day, they’re on their own and therefore that needs a certain level of support, which I’m sure Texila will give,” Professor Opadeyi said.

He disclosed that for the year 2022, Texila has received over 50 Doctor of Philosophy (PhDs) scholarships and were given in total over 700 scholarships. Additionally, through Texila, the Tests of General Educational Development (GED) will be pioneered to increase enrollment.

He noted that there is not a lack of skills in Guyana, but rather, the lack of certification from globally recognised institutions like Texila.
Professor Opadeyi encouraged students to make the best of the opportunity that is being presented to them.

“Try as much as possible not to miss a class session or make sure you don’t fail. As you know, GOAL only allows you to fail one course. If you fail more than one course you have to pay to take the [course again],” the professor stated.
He noted that the students must use the knowledge gained to improve Guyana.
