A SERVING member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is currently in custody for armed robbery committed on a 17-year-old salesgirl, while the police are on the hunt for two of his accomplices.
According to a police release, the victim was robbed on Friday, April 29, between 19:50hrs and 20:00hrs at Good Hope, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
The teen was robbed of one ZTE cellphone valued at $40,000 and one Samsung Galaxy cell phone valued at $130,000.
According to a police report, the victim and her friend were heading home on a bicycle when they noticed three males fixing their bicycles along the Good Hope Public Road.
“As they approached where the males were, one male grabbed onto the victim’s bicycle and demanded her belongings and he took out her cellular phones, while the other two went to her friend and began to search him but found nothing,” the police report said.
The police said that a scuffle began between the two suspects and the victim’s friend. The third suspect intervened and lashed the victim’s friend to his head with a ‘toy gun.’
The suspects mounted their bicycles and made good their escape. The matter was reported to the police, who visited the area and found pieces of the broken toy gun.
Based on the information received, the police arrested one of the alleged suspects, who is a serving GDF rank and who also lives in Mahaica.
The police are currently on the hunt for the two other suspects who are still at large.
