MINISTER of Local Government and Regional Development with parliamentary responsibilities for the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region, Nigel Dharamlall, has called on local contractors in Region Two to provide employment for the people.
He was at the time speaking at the historic signing of $136M in contracts awarded by the National Procurement and Tender Administration board.
The contacts awarded included the rehabilitation of the regional State House; the construction of a bridge at Onderneeming; the upgrading of David James Street at Charity; the upgrading of Damon Street at Dartmouth; the extension of Johanna Cecilia Secondary school; and the construction of a health post and landing at Siriki.
Contractors benefitting from the various projects included K and J contracting service; H Ramballi Construction; V J Construction; Vande Construction and Triple F variety store.

Minister Dharamlall said that the projects will aid in further development and transformation of the region.
“Today’s signing represents 16 per cent of the capital programme of the region; the region has capital programme over $866M; these are the major capital programmes.
“We also have, under the current programme, hundreds of millions to be done in contracts,” Dharamlall said.
It was noted that the contracts were awarded to companies in the region and, in that regard, the Minister urged the contractors to ensure that they employ people from within the region.
“We expect that you will recruit more people and you will get more persons on your payroll,” Dharamlall further explained.
He also warned the contractors that they have to complete their projects on time.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of Region Two, Vilma De Silva, said that the project falls under the region’s Capital work programme but was awarded through NPTAB.
She urged the contractors to produce quality work and in a timely manner. The projects are expected to commence in a week’s time.
