ALEXIS Turpin, who was on trial for killing her reputed husband, was, on Wednesday, freed after Justice Jo-Ann Barlow upheld a no-case submission made by her attorney, Damien DaSilva.

Turpin was on trial at the Demerara High Court for the capital offence which alleged that, on July 2, 2017, in Georgetown, she murdered Sherwin Johnson. She had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After state prosecutor, Lisa Cave closed her case on Wednesday, Turpin’s attorney, DaSilva made a no-case submission, calling for the indictment to be dismissed on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

As such, the judge upheld the submission and stated that the state had failed to establish its case against Turpin for the offence of murder. She then ordered the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Last year, Turpin and her co-accused, Sterfon Barlow, were first tried for the capital offence before another High Court judge, however, the 12-member jury could not arrive at a verdict. A retrial was ordered.

Barlow later pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

According to reports, the accused, Turpin and the deceased, Johnson were co-parents for one child. The three lived together in Lodge, Georgetown.

On July 2, 2017, Johnson reportedly returned home early from work and discovered Turpin intimately engaged with Barlow.

A confrontation reportedly ensued, and it is alleged that Turpin and her co-accused reportedly attacked Johnson, dealing him several lashes about his body.

She then allegedly armed herself with a crowbar and stabbed Johnson several times. Johnson was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he later died.
