Guyana to officially welcome Queen’s Baton on Friday

BIRMINGHAM 2022 is staging the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – an epic journey across the Commonwealth, with The Queen’s Baton visiting all 72 nations and territories.
The Relay began on October 7, 2021, with Her Majesty The Queen placing her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton. The Baton is now on its 294-daylong journey to every corner of the Commonwealth.

According to Commonwealth Sport, this collective journey will ignite hope, solidarity and collaboration, as it connects communities. embraces unique cultures and shares inspirational stories.
On Friday, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), through its president Kalam Juman-Yassin, will officially welcome the Baton when it arrives at its 46th destination, having previously visited Belize.

According to GOA, “During its time in Guyana, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Linden, Iwokrama River Lodge, River View and Annai and will experience historical locations in Region 10, the Canopy Walkway and the beauty of our hinterland areas and people.”

During its stay in Guyana, the organisers have planned a busy schedule of activities and events with opportunities to showcase untold stories from Baton-bearers, athletes, and young people who are striving for change in their community.

The Queen’s Baton will be carried by representatives of UNICEF and the British High Commission, athletes, schoolchildren and several persons in the indigenous communities.
The Queen’s Baton Relay has been a feature since the inaugural Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games.

GOA president Juman-Yassin expressed delight that Guyana is a part of this extraordinary journey and according to him, “It’s a way to highlight and promote the beauty of Guyana to people across the Commonwealth.”
Region 10 Chairman and Local Organising Committee Member, Deron Adams is also looking forward to celebrating the arrival of the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in his community and is well on track with planning for the occasion.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay started at Buckingham Palace on October 7, 2021, when Her Majesty The Queen placed Her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton and passed it to four-time Paralympic gold medallist and Team England athlete, Kadeena Cox, who had the honour of being the first of thousands of Baton-bearers to carry it.
