A 30-year-old businessman, of East Street, Georgetown, is now in police custody following the discovery of large quantities of foreign and local currencies, cannabis and uncustomed liquor at his house on Wednesday.

According to information from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), officers, after presenting a search warrant, conducted a search of the businessman’s property and found G$2.5 million, US$75,697; SRD4,664; EURO6,145; BAR$19; CAN$40; T&T$171; Bs100; and BZD$100.

A further search was conducted on the bottom flat, in a locked and secured room which the businessman opened. Inside the room, investigators found a quantity of uncustomed liquor, which included 24 bottles Double Black; 16 bottles Johnny Walker Black; 11 bottles Jack Daniels Whisky; two bottles Merry Irish Cream Liquor; 16 cases Budweiser Beer (24 bottles each); one case Red Bull Energy Drink (24 tins); and 47 boxes of disposable latex gloves (100 each).

The parcels of cannabis being weighed

Police later noticed a small blue-and-white cooler with the businessman’s logo on top of a cupboard, and when searched in the businessman’s presence, police ranks found a black plastic bag containing two parcels wrapped with transparent plastic. The content was probed in the businessman’s presence, and found to be suspected cannabis.

The businessman was told of the offence committed, arrested and cautioned. His wife, mother-in-law, and wife’s 18-year-old cousin were escorted to CID Headquarters, and in their presence, the suspected drug was weighed and recorded as amounting to 2.030kgs (two kilos, 30 grams).

The contraband, narcotics, cash and other items were lodged with the custodian of the property room.

In addition to the items found during the initial search, officers, on the same day, executed a second search at another property at Providence, East Bank Demerara, owned by the said suspect.

During that search, three DVRs were confiscated from the property and lodged with the custodian of the property room for processing.
