Woman, 65, is latest COVID-19 fatality; 353 new cases recorded

A 65-year-old fully vaccinated woman from Region Four (Demerara- Mahaica), who died on January 30, has been recorded as Guyana’s latest COVID-19 fatality, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

According to the ministry’s dashboard, the woman’s death now brings the total number of deaths recorded since the first case in March 2020, to 1,166 with 111 of those being recorded during the month of January.

Meanwhile, another 353 people have tested positive for the virus over a 24-hour period.

This now takes the total number of confirmed cases in Guyana to 59,803.

One new case was recorded in Region One; 27 in Region Two; 46 in Region Three, 200 in Region Four; six in Region Five; 31 in Region Six; 18 in both Regions Eight and Nine and six in Region 10.

There are now 16 patients receiving critical care in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 203 persons in institutional isolation, six in institutional quarantine and 11,324 in home isolation.

Additionally, it was disclosed that 47,094 people have recovered from the virus.

The ministry continues to advise persons to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and to practise physical distancing and adequate sanitisation.
