Minibus driver charged with vehicle fraud

A 36-year-old minibus driver, who was accused of swindling almost $1 million from a woman, was, on Monday, released on $100,000 bail.

Cerbert Bagot, of Anna Catherina West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the fraud charge.

Particulars of the charge alleged that on February 15, 2021, at Brickdam, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained the sum of $800,000 from Lasayee Howard by falsely pretending that he was in a position to sell a motor vehicle, knowing same to be false.

Bagot told the court that he has already started repaying the victim and thus far has handed over $200,000.

The magistrate released Bagot on $100,000 bail and adjourned the matter until February 21, by which time he is expected to fully repay the victim.
