SIXTY SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Roopnarine Ramoutar, who was riding an electric bike, was killed in an accident on the Number 72 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, on Tuesday.

According to reports, a speeding motor lorry crashed into him when he made a sudden turn.

The body of the Lot 219 Number 72 Village resident is currently at the Skeldon Public Hospital awaiting an autopsy.

The driver of the motor lorry bearing registration number GHH 7458 was identified as Diaram Persaud, 52, of Lot 8 ‘C’ Number 74 Village, Corentyne.

Police, in a statement, said that the motor lorry was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate of speed whilst the electric cycle was proceeding north along the western side when the rider made a sudden right turn east in the vicinity of the Number 72 Access Road and ended up in the path of the motor lorry.

The cyclist, police said came into contact with the front right portion of the lorry. He was subsequently flung off his bike and landed some distance away on the road surface on the eastern corner. The electric cycle got stuck under the motor lorry which continued driving before stopping about 300 feet away in the eastern drive lane.

Police said that, as a result of the collision, the cyclist received injuries to his head and about his body and was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor, who pronounced him dead on arrival.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver recorded zero readings. He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. A notice of intended prosecution was also served.
