(CMC) – Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey is set for his first game of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers while West Ham striker Michail Antonio returns to a 24-man Reggae Boyz squad announced for next week’s clashes with El Salvador and United States.
Fans are set to witness the overseas-based stars live as the Jamaica Football Federation and government have collaborated to allow 5 000 fully vaccinated persons to watch the November 16 home fixture against United States at the National Stadium.
Bailey, 24, has missed all six matches in Jamaican’s flagging campaign and has not played since turning out in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States last July.
More recently, he was ruled out by injury but returned in Villa’s chastening 4-1 home defeat to the Hammers last weekend.
Antonio, meanwhile, made an unflattering debut in Jamaica’s 3-0 loss to Panama in the country’s capital last September, but then opted out of the games following, due to an impasse with the JFF over having his personal physiotherapist accompany him for international fixtures.
The 31-year-old, who was born in the United Kingdom, has already scored six times for West Ham this season.
Bailey and Antonio will be joined by a plethora of UK-based stars including the likes of Fulham’s Bobby Reid, Queens Park Rangers’ Andre Gray, Bristol City’s Adrian Mariappa, Reading’s Liam Moore and Ravel Morrison of Derby County.
Morrison, 28, capped by England at various youth levels, last featured for Jamaica against Panama when he was hauled off at half-time.
Jamaica travel to San Salvador on November 12 and then host the United States four days later when spectators will be in attendance for the first time, amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Confirmation of fans’ vaccination status will take place through the Ministry of Health before tickets for the game can be purchased, JFF president Michael Ricketts confirmed.
“The JFF is working with public health authorities to have in place a network of trained COVID-19 marshals as well as security personnel to monitor compliance with respective protocols,” Ricketts said.
Jamaica has recorded 89 216 cases since the start of the pandemic, along with 2 249 deaths. There are nearly 28 000 active cases.
The Reggae Boyz currently lie sixth on five points in the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers, their only victory coming in their last outing on October 13 when they beat Honduras 2-0 in San Pedro Sula.
The top three teams of the eight-nation group qualify directly for next year’s World Cup while the fourth-placed team enter an inter-confederation playoff.
