GUYANA’S long jump record-holder and National 100-metre and long jump champion, Emanuel Archibald, signed a one-year endorsement deal with Carib Brewery Limited under its Malta Carib brand. Archibald now joins table tennis star Chelsea Edghill (Smalta) and West Indies cricketer Romario Shepherd (Ginseng Up) as the athletes to (so far) pick up endorsement by Carib Brewery Limited. The contract will make the country’s 2021 South American Senior Championships 100m silver medallist the face of the Malta Carib locally.
Archibald, who is on the brink of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Japan, will head to The Bahamas this weekend, compliments of Malta Carib, after the company sponsored his airfare.
For Archibald, acquiring the Malta Carib endorsement is a dream come true, adding “I am pleased to receive this sponsorship from Malta Carib and I just want to thank God, my parents and the Brusches family for keeping me grounded to this point in my life.”
“This moment is something I wrote down since 2018 as a goal and to receive this is a dream come through. The belief of betting on yourself and hoping that one day someone sees your hard work paved the way for such a moment. I am thankful for this sponsorship and am looking forward to a long-term partnership with this great company,” Archibald stated at the contract signing.
Carib Brewery Limited Country Manager, Kelvin Singh, while highlighting the importance of such relationships with athletes, said the company is “extremely happy to commence this partnership with the very talented Mr Emanuel Archibald that will span for the next twelve months. Emanuel has been one of the top and most consistent athletes during the past couple of years to represent Guyana”.
“We believe that these strategic relationships are required to support the athletes and provide sustenance during the year rather than a one-off sponsorship. I would like to wish Emanuel all the best during the meet in The Bahamas and the rest of the season,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, Brand Manager of Malta Carib, Gabriel Lopes said “Emanuel has the heart and focus it takes to become an exceptional athlete. He is already halfway there and Malta Carib is delighted to be partnering with him to assist in making his dream a reality.
“Just look at his track record so far, he was able to set the Guyanese record in the long jump and now he aims for bigger and better (things). We believe that this is just the beginning of greater things to come for him.”
Mark Mason’s long jump record of 8.07 metres, which he had set in April of 1993, was broken by Archibald on March 7, 2019 at a meet in Jamaica, after the now Malta Carib athlete had leaped 8.07. Showing that his feat was no fluke, Archibald at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) All Comers Meet 1 on May 11, 2019, reset the National Long Jump record to 8.12 metres. Currently, Archibald holds the 29th best jump in the world this year, after posting an impressive 8.10 metres at the National Track and Field Centre to open his season. At the time it was a world-leading distance in the long jump.
Archibald has represented Guyana at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, chalking up an impressive resumé in Jamaica where he’s based as part of the Ricketts Performance Centre under coach Kerry-Lee Ricketts. (Rawle Toney)
