A 26-year-old labourer, was, on Tuesday, remanded to prison for stabbing his neighbour to death over a pack of cigarettes.
Devon Boucher, called “Kingman” of Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court and was not required to plead to the offence. Particulars of the charge alleged that on February 25, 2021, at Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, Boucher murdered Clifton Bhagwandat, a 30-year-old horse cart operator. According to reports, on the day in question about 17:20hrs, Bhagwandat went to Boucher to purchase a pack of cigarettes. Bhagwandat reportedly didn’t had the required money for the cigarettes, which resulted in an argument.
During the argument, Bhagwandat snatched away his money from Boucher and said he is going to a nearby shop to buy his cigarettes instead. Boucher became annoyed and picked up a knife. He then, allegedly, stabbed Bhagwandat several times about his body and made good his escape.
Bhagwandat ran a short distance and collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
