JUSTICE Simone Morris-Ramlall has imposed a 16-year sentence on Ryan Singh, who confessed to killing his girlfriend Parbattie Lalkpal, called “Roseanna”, 16, at her Number Two Village home, East Canje on July 22, 2017.
Relatives of the deceased, on Thursday, were too distraught to speak when asked for a witness impact statement by State Prosecutrix, Tuanna Harding, at the Berbice Assizes.
Singh, now 33 years, formerly of Lot 48 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was originally charged with murder but in an effort to not waste the court’s time, he pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, which was accepted by the State.
Prior to sentencing, Singh, who was represented by Attorney, Surihya Sabsook, pleaded for mercy while recounting the memories of the incident which still haunts him.

Government Pathologist, Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan, recorded the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to an incised wound to the throat.
On Saturday 22 July, 2017, Lalkpal was found motionless, wrapped in sheets, with a deep incised wound to her throat at her Lot 369 Number Two Village home, East Canje, Berbice.
The discovery was made minutes after a 10-year-old girl had witnessed an altercation between the teenager and her much-older boyfriend.
The concealed body was discovery by Nadia Persaud, 41, who went to the home after responding to an urgent plea of her 10-year-old daughter, Zailoon.
Zailoon had moments before ran a few yards away to her mother, clutching her two-year-old crying sister in arms, to report that Singh and Lalkpal were fighting.
“But it was not an unusual feature. They would normally fight. But apparently, Rosanna felt that something was amiss as she had collected my two daughters from my home at Canefield Village, also in East Canje, and brought them to her home, while I was working at Classic Car Wash,’’ Persaud had reported to the Guyana Chronicle
She added: “So whilst I was at work, Zailoon came with the baby and reported the fighting. However, when I got to the scene, I started to call for Rosanna but there was no response. I looked around but saw no one. I assumed that the couple had left. So I was about to put my children in a car to send them home when I saw my Rakhi brother ‘Hooke’ coming and he asked what happen. ‘Hooke’ and Rosanna’s mother are in a relationship. Consequently, we returned into the lower flat of the two storey building. Again, we called for Rosanna. At that point we assumed she was hiding from us as she would normally do so. But after careful checks, we saw her foot protruding from under a sheet and after a closer inspection we realised that she was wrapped in two sheets. A pillow was close by. It is believed that she was stifled before her throat was slit. She was lifeless and unresponsive.”
Meanwhile, Zailoon, speaking in the presence of her mother, told the Guyana Chronicle that Rosanna’s boyfriend was quarreling with her over relationships.
The child said, at that time, they were on the upper flat. Rosanna, she said, had the two-year-old girl in her arms and it was during that time that the suspect was seen grabbing hold of the teenager’s pony tail, while pulling her down the inner stairs.
“As he pulled her, the baby fell out of her hands. I went to pick up the baby, who was then crying. He told me to take my sister and go out of the yard before he hit me. But as I was leaving the kitchen area, Rosanna kept calling,’Moma! Moma! Moma! which is my home name but I could not help her. I was afraid. I ran to my mother instead,” Zailoon related.
Singh, after committing the act, reportedly walked calmly away from the scene, heading in the direction of the Canje overpass.
After being on the run for almost three weeks, he was arrested at Springlands, Corentyne.
Investigators were told that Singh had been seeking refuge in an abandoned home in the Upper Corentyne, district.
