– several arrested
POLICE have arrested several persons in connection with the murder of 58-year-old Arjunan Andiappan, known as “Keks”, who was beaten and chopped by a group of men on December 31, 2020 at Wallace Street, East Canje Berbice.
Andiappan was a labourer of Kalabash Creek, in Canje Creek, Berbice. He died at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital at around 01:30h on January 1, 2021, hours after the incident.
His sister, Tangachee Balgobin, told the Sunday Chronicle that he took some food from her at around noon on Thursday and then left for Wallace Street; on his way back to her, he was allegedly chopped and beaten to the head.
The mother of one of the suspects rushed him to the hospital.

“The woman said she is going to take him to the hospital but I said no is my brother. I came back home to get dressed and by the time I reach back, she already took him.
“When I walking out the street, them done come back from the hospital but he [was] still bleeding, so I [went] to the Reliance [Police] Station and they give me a form to give them doctors, but when I reach, a nurse tell me the doctors done take care of him and stitch him and they can’t do nothing, [so] let I bring him home back.”
The sister said when he arrived home with her brother, his wounds began to bleed profusely. She rushed him back to the New Amsterdam Hospital and at around 18:00h, she realised he became weak and was still bleeding from the wound to the head.
He subsequently succumbed to his injuries at around 01:30h on New Year’s Day. The incident has left relatives in a state of shock and anger at both the hospital staff and the suspects.
“When they took him first, if they had admit him and treat him, I think he could had a chance to survive or when I take him back the second time when they refuse me, because he was bleeding but the nurses said the doctors already stitch him and they can’t do nothing.”
Balgobin noted that while her brother was a habitual drinker, he was a peaceful person and so she has no idea what might have triggered the men to murder him.
She noted that her bother lived and worked in Kalabash Creek and only came to spend time with them for the New Year. Police investigations are ongoing.
