TWO persons are in police custody following the discovery of 11 kilograms (24 lbs) of marijuana which was allegedly thrown into the Berbice River on Sunday night, in the vicinity of Mara, East Bank Berbice.

Police said the discovery was made about 23:00hrs by members of the police marine patrol. The wooden vessel, with an outboard engine, is currently lodged at the Central Police Station.
According to a police report, the suspects, of Herstelling on the West Bank of the Berbice River, were observed in the wooden vessel and after they saw the patrol, they reportedly threw the illegal substance overboard.

The bag was quickly retrieved by the lawmen and upon inspection, it was discovered that it contained seven transparent plastic wrapped parcels, and a black plastic bag containing, leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis.

The suspects were promptly arrested and were escorted to the Central Police Station, New Amsterdam where the illegal drugs were weighed and amounted to 24.4 pounds.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Chronicle understands that an internal investigation was also launched since the police ranks did not adhere to Standard Operating Procedures.
