Sanitation worker dies in two-vehicle smash-up

FORTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD sanitation worker Zameer Isfehani of lot 12 Leonora, West Coast Demerara, lost his life while working on Tuesday on the Montrose Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

According to reports, the accident involved motor lorry #GVV2646 owned by Puran Brothers Disposal Inc., and was being driven by a 55-year-old resident of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara; the other vehicle, motor lorry #GWW 9841 driven by a 52- year- old resident of One Mile Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

In a gruesome video that was circulated on social media, it could be seen that the vehicle owned by Puran Brothers Disposal Inc., lorry #GVV 2646 was stationary on the northern side of the northern carriageway of the Montrose Public Road, East Coast Demerara, collecting garbage; the now deceased Isfehani was standing at the rear of the lorry when lorry #GWW9841 which was proceeding east along the said roadway at a fast rate of speed, ploughed into Isfehani and pinned him into the rear of the stationary lorry. Isfehani was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of lorry #GWW 9841 and the occupant Wendell Cort, age 46 years, received injuries about their bodies. They were assisted out of the lorry in a conscious condition and taken to the GPHC where they were treated and admitted patients in the Male Surgical Ward. As a result of the incident the driver suffered a heart attack and other injuries, while another occupant suffered a fractured right leg.

Both men remain at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation under observation. An investigation into the events leading up to and the cause of the accident is still being conducted by the Guyana Police Force.
