HAVING migrated almost three decades ago, two brothers, Gavin and Gary Alleyne, who specialise in the legal and financial field in the United States, have always sought of tangible ways to give back to their country.

The young men, who are lindeners by birth, are like many other overseas-based Guyanese from the diaspora who are seeking to invest in the country of their birth, by giving back to social programmes, aimed at empowering their fellow countrymen and women.
Hence the brothers have launched their very own non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Centre for Guyanese Progress which seeks to provide support and assistance to the less fortunate women and young girls across the country.

The Centre for Guyanese Progress has commenced giving back in several ways to various communities. Gary stated that they have distributed some US$4,000 worth of women and girls clothing to persons in Linden, Sophia, Skeldon and Central Georgetown.
“We firmly believe that our young girls and women are critically important to national development and with so many ills primarily affecting them we are focusing heavily on giving back to them. As such, we decided to secure several pieces of clothing to assist in a meaningful way,” Gary said.

He further disclosed that while they have been giving back for several years, they are doing it in a more organized manner.

“Over the years we have been coming and giving back but recognizing the need for more assistance we thought it best to have the NGO in order to provide regular and significant support for several projects and programmes,” he promised.

Adding that the NGO’s focus is on women and girls, Gary stated that they intend to do projects and programmes that will address several social ills affecting boys and young men.
“We haven’t forgotten boys and young men as we see the grave challenges and difficulties confronting them, especially when addressing interpersonal relationships. However, we are starting with girls and young women as they are ideal to start with,” he declared.
Gary said that the NGO is empowering and assisting persons, while ensuring that several social ills are addressed.

“We have created this NGO with the sole intention of finding projects and or programmes for the progressiveness of Guyanese. Our projects will aid young people to better their skills, education and community development in creating opportunities to ensure that they take their positions in some of these big social domestic issues. We see violence against women, we see mental issues, we see the building up of social groups,” Gavin stressed.
Gavin stated that there are several projects that the NGO will be executing, noting that their involvement will be in sports, education and cultural activities.

Confessing that their hearts and passion remain at home, stressing that they are truly committed to giving back. Gavin promised that in the coming months the NGO will be executing several charitable and sport-related events with the primary objective of empowering and enhancing persons’ lifestyles.
