THE National Cultural Centre, on Monday, once again, came alive, as pupils from the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara dominated the stage, commanding the attention of the judges and the audience.

It was a medley of colours and drama through the art of dance as the performers danced their hearts out to cop a spot in the upcoming national competition.
Making sure to leave a mark, the Mocha Arcadia Primary School copped first place in the (5-7) Wind dance category, Strathspey Primary placed second and the New Diamond Grove Primary followed in third place.
In the (5-7) religious belief dance category, the Success Primary school commanded the stage with its ‘there is an overflow’ dance performance category, the Victoria Primary school ‘victorious dancers’ placed second and the Peter’s Hall Primary school followed in the third place position.

However, in the fantasy category, the Swami Purnananda and Eccles Primary school put up a quite a spirited performance with their imaginative performances. However, in the end, it was the ‘Cultural Barbies’ from the Eccles Primary School who copped the first prize while Swami Purnananda followed in second with their fairytale inspired dance called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Meanwhile, the ‘Jokers’ from the St. Andrews Primary School on the East Coast of Demerara made the stage of the National Cultural Centre come alive with the sounds of drums and flutes, with their rendition of a masquerade flouncing in a choreographed enthusiasm, and reflecting on one of Guyana’s oldest cultural traditions, paving the way for their win in the masquerade category.

Additionally, the Mahaica Primary school copped the first prize in the (8-10) Interpretive Category, followed by Hope Friendship who also won the first prize in the (8-10) Religious belief category. The Beterverwagting Primary took the first prize in Legend and Tradition category, with their version of ‘coconut women’.
However, it was the Golden Grove Primary School, from the East Coast of Demerara which truly commanded the stage with its social commentary piece ‘Totally Submissive’ gaining the top spot to represent the East Coast District in the upcoming national competitions.
