New Amsterdam man found afloat in East Berbice

THE body of Cleon Outar, 29, of Ogelton Dam, Plantation Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, was fished out of the Republic Canal on Monday morning, hours after he left a New Amsterdam bar with friends.

The body, which was partially submerged, was discovered some distance south of the Region Six Democratic Complex.

As news of the discovery spread around the township, Outar’s wife, Shamdai Savichar, came forward and identified him.

According to her, they’d both left home on Saturday evening to hang out with friends at the Guinness Bar on Main Street, New Amsterdam.
After spending some time there, they left with some friends and proceeded to the Rainbow Bar at the corner of Charles Place and Republic Road, where they continued the session.

But after a few drinks, he and his friends grew restless and decided to check out another bar, but did not invite her along.

Left to her own devices at the Rainbow Bar, Shamdai said she soon grew tired of drinking alone and left for home.

She said it was not until Monday afternoon that she learnt that an unidentified body had been found in the township, and after not hearing from him since he and his friends left her at the Rainbow Bar on Saturday night, she decided to check with the Central Police Station to see if it was he, and was subsequently directed to the Arokium Funeral Home where her fears were confirmed.

Though she said he was employed as a labourer, she did not say where.
An investigation has since been launched into the matter.
