CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan, on Thursday, January 09, 2020, remanded a 30-year-old taxi-driver to prison for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old child.
Sattish Ramkellawan appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to the charge, when it was read to him.
Particulars of the charge stated that, between January 1, 2019 and February 12, 2019, at Timehri, he engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen.
According to information, during the period mentioned above, the child’s parents had hired Ramkellawan to pick up the child from school and take her home. Ramkellawan, however, picked up the child from school, and, instead of taking her home, he took her to the Jubilee Resort and raped her.
The child later told her parents what had happened to her; the matter was reported immediately. An investigation was launched and Ramkellawan was arrested and charged.
Magistrate McLennan, after listening to the reports, remanded Ramkellawan to prison until January 13, 2020.
