Dear Editor
YESTERDAY over 2 billion people, many of whom are Indigenous, still do not have basic sanitation facilities such as toilets or latrines. Article 21 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples makes specific reference to adequate sanitation for Indigenous Peoples; but on a global scale, much of the world’s population are without proper ablution facilities.
World Toilet Day is a day that is commemorated annually on November 19 to tackle the global sanitation crisis. This year’s aim is to deliver on Sustainable Development Goal 6, which promises clean water and adequate sanitation for all by the year 2030. Indigenous Peoples are among the most marginalised people in the world.
Article 21 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples states:
“Indigenous Peoples have the right, without discrimination, to the improvement of their economic and social conditions, including, inter alia, in the areas of education, employment, vocational training and retraining, housing, sanitation, health and social security.
